SPIDERS IN THE HOME

A Spider infestation is a serious issue for residential and commercial structures if left untreated. Spiders may be an indication of the presence of other pests that are their food source. Most species of spiders are not harmful to people, although the fear of spiders and the stress caused by a spider infestation is normal and rational.  In Delaware, we find one of the most commonly known venomous and medically significant spiders of the United States, the Black Widow Spider.  The Brown Recluse spider, although reported by some Delawareans, is not established and is not native to the Delaware area.  Delaware homes and businesses also provide attractive habitats for Wolf Spiders, Sac Spiders, and a variety of other ground spiders, hunting spiders, and web building spiders.

TYPES OF SPIDERS IN DELAWARE

Black Widow Spiders are quite prevalent in Delaware and are often found in dark, sheltered and undisturbed areas around the home. Female Black Widows grow up to 1.5 inches long and are black with a large abdomen bearing a red hourglass-shaped marking. The female is much larger than the male, and it is the female’s bite that is hazardous to humans. The Black Widow’s venom attacks the human nervous system. Initial symptoms include pain, swelling, and skin irritation at the bite location. A double bite marking made by both of the spider’s fangs is typical. The spider’s venom is more dangerous to children, older persons, and people with chronic conditions. More severe symptoms include nausea, abdominal pain, sweating, muscle pain, and difficulty in breathing.

True to their name, Brown Recluse Spiders prefer to stay hidden away from view.  These small spiders are usually hairy and brown with a violin-shaped marking on their abdomen. Because of their marking, they are sometimes called violin spiders or fiddle-backs. Inside buildings, the Brown Recluse is likely to hide in spaces where people are least active, such as storage areas, closets, basements and garages. Like most venomous creatures, Brown Recluse bites are most dangerous to young children, seniors, and people with other health conditions. Brown Recluse venom is more deadly than rattlesnake venom and attacks human tissues and cells and is considered the most potent of all spiders in the United States.  Necrosis and tissue destruction around bite areas are common, and a significant immune reaction is normally triggered as well. Brown Recluse bites often involves extended medical treatment and surgery.  Although possible for Brown Recluse spider activity to be found or introduced in Delaware, it is considered unlikely & rare.

Yellow Sac Spiders, common across the United States, are believed to be responsible for more spider bites than that of any other spider species.  They live in leaf litter, grass, bushes, under rocks or boards and behind shutters when in the yard, and will enter homes through unsealed doors, torn or damaged screens, utility lines and in plants brought into the home.  Yellow Sac spiders can be slightly aggressive and their bites may be painful causing swelling, burning, itching and blistering.

Some other common spiders found in Delaware include Wolf spiders, Jumping spiders, Orb Weaver spiders, Crab spiders, Funnel Web spiders, Cobweb spiders and Cellar spiders. Wolf spiders are a larger hunting spider and are unique in that they carry their spiderlings on top of them after they hatch. Jumping spiders make up the largest species of spiders world wide, with many types found in Delaware. Cobweb spiders, Cellar spiders, Funnel Web and Sac spiders are types of spiders most often found inside of the home.

HOW DO SPIDERS GET IN YOUR HOME

Spiders seek out comfortable places to hide inside your home or business where they can generally stay out of sight while staying close to their preferred food sources. They are attracted to your indoor and outdoor plants as their natural habitat. They also like to hide and live underneath furniture, in closets, along any structural cracks or crevasses, in storage areas and garages, inside cardboard boxes, and anywhere clutter accumulates. Spiders enter homes through cracks, openings in the home and through windows and doors. They are also often brought into the home on plants, firewood or other items that may have been stored outside. Even though most spiders are venomous and have toxins that they are able to inject through a bite, the bites are generally not considered a medical threat or dangerous (except in the of case allergic reactions to the toxin).
